Colonel Ashutosh Sharma has achieved martyrdom while being in action against terrorists in Handwara. The brave heart Colonel who was with the 21 Rashtriya Rifles 19 – Guards had extensive firsthand experience in counter insurgency operations. The loss of Ashutosh in an operation which was planned and executed by terrorists is a big blow to the Indian Army.

This is the first time since the supreme sacrifice of Santosh Mahadik in November, 2015 when an officer of the rank of Colonel has been killed in action. 

 As per statement issued by the Indian Army, these men were trapped in a somewhat hostage like situation. However, it seems that they were trapped in deception. This is even painful to learn that they couldn't even fire a single bullet against terrorists. They had information about terrorists hiding in a village in the forest of Handwara. The team led by Col. Ashutosh reached there. Suddenly, two terrorists fired from a distant. The team saw a deserted house adjacent to them. They entered in the house in the hope of taking position against the terrorists who were firing. They were unaware about the plan, obviously. 


In that abandoned house, two terrorists had taken position. They were well - trained and heavily armed. Col. Ashutosh and team entered the house. Suddenly there were firing. Before they could understand anything, the game was over. Other member of the unit took position instantly and didn't let the terrorists flee. These two terrorists were killed in the morning.
